Bright Futures is proud to be working with the State of California in promoting the California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program (CalKIDS). CalKIDS gives children in California a jump start on saving for college or career training by providing free student savings accounts.

The Bright Futures team will continue to focus on helping students and families enroll, as Monterey County has at least 74,000 eligible children, representing a potential of $36,000,000 in available college savings accounts.

To be eligible for CalKIDS, participants must be:

  1. Born in California on or after July 1, 2022; or

  2. An eligible low-income public school student in grades 1-12* in California.

All participants receive a seed deposit in a CalKIDS account to help pay for future education after high school.

Supporting Our Community with CalKIDS Access

Bright Futures tailors support for our school districts and community-based organization (CBO) partners to streamline the process of claiming CalKIDS accounts. When we first became involved in promoting CalKIDS, our primary focus was on creating awareness and building trust within the community. We wanted everyone to feel safe and informed about the benefits of college savings accounts, particularly among families who may not have had previous exposure to such financial tools.

To facilitate this, we developed a "train the trainer" model, empowering educators, outreach workers, and community leaders to serve as trusted messengers. These trainers are equipped to guide families through the CalKIDS registration process, answer common questions, and explain how these accounts can support long-term educational goals.

We also created a shared community Google folder that all partners can access. This folder includes a comprehensive set of resources such as bilingual flyers (English and Spanish), QR codes linking directly to the CalKIDS portal, ready-to-use presentation decks, FAQs, and customizable outreach forms. These materials are designed to be easily adapted for use in a variety of settings, from school events and parent meetings to health fairs and neighborhood canvassing efforts.

By centralizing and simplifying these tools, we’ve helped reduce barriers for partners and families alike, ensuring that more students can access and activate their CalKIDS accounts with confidence.

CalKIDS Participation and Funding Overview

Our ongoing efforts to support CalKIDS have helped thousands of students access college savings. Below is a current breakdown of student and newborn participation, claimed funds, and the remaining funds available for eligible students.
