Student Goals

These seven goal areas were defined to focus the work of the partnership on key milestones in a student's educational journey. Click on each goal below to learn more about our commitments.

Student Goals

Goal 1: Kindergarten Readiness

Vision: Children are prepared for kindergarten with access to quality, affordable early care and education. Early learning experiences help develop language, reasoning, and social skills, setting the foundation for success in school and beyond. However, many families struggle to find affordable, high-quality childcare. Ensuring access to these opportunities is crucial for helping children enter kindergarten ready to succeed and thrive throughout life.

Goal 3: Middle Grade Math

Vision: Monterey County students in 6th–8th grade have access to equitable math learning opportunities, ensuring more students perform at or above grade level.

Critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills are essential during the middle and high school years. Ensuring all students have the support and resources to develop strong math skills prepares them for higher-level coursework, problem-solving in real-world situations, and future career opportunities.

Goal 5: Postsecondary Enrollment

Vision: High school graduates are prepared to enter a college or job training program to pursue their career aspirations

We know that there is a need to help students to be prepared with the academic skills, financial resources, and knowledge to prepare for higher education and entry into a career.

Goal 7: Employment

Vision: Students transition from education to meaningful careers with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to achieve self-sufficiency.

From early childhood education through college completion, equitable access to learning opportunities and support systems ensures that students are prepared to enter the workforce as skilled, self-sufficient employees. By strengthening career pathways, fostering work-based learning experiences, and connecting individuals to sustainable job opportunities, we can build a thriving local economy and a stronger community

Goal 2: Early Grade Reading

Vision: Children read, write and learn English in the elementary grades. We know that is it important for students to read and write in the language of instruction, that learning to read forms the foundation of learning in other academic subjects, and that early grade reading is a strong predictor of academic success. Monterey County has one of the highest rates of English learners in California, so supporting students to learn English and continue to grow in their native language is critical to success in this goal area.

Goal 4: High School Graduation

Vision: More students graduate from high school prepared for their next steps in college, career, and life.

High school graduation is a critical milestone that opens doors to higher education, career opportunities, and economic mobility. Ensuring that students have the academic, social, and emotional support they need increases graduation rates and prepares them for success beyond high school. By creating strong school connections, addressing barriers to graduation, and promoting student well-being, we can help more students reach this important achievement.

Goal 6: Postsecondary Completion

Vision: Young adults complete a program, certificate or degree that qualifies them to enter a promising career

We know that adults with post-high school training benefit from higher salaries, that communities benefit when graduates have in-demand skills, and that employers benefit when locally trained employees are available.
